If you want to know how much you value your friends

consider losing one, even if it's only for a few minutes.
I was just on the phone with Dana.
She was driving home from Dumas. Her stepson had a game there.
All of a sudden, mid conversation with me, I hear a HUGE crash, glass shattering, squealing tires, screaming, then nothing.
Dead silence.
"Dana?"
"DANA???"
by now I have chills.
"DANA ARE YOU OKAY?"
in a whisper, I hear: "please call my daddy, I had a wreck."
then it cuts off. I am hoping, that it is a lost signal.... but I am feeling that it wasn't. There are a lot of bridges on that highway.

I grab the phone, dial her parents number, which I know by heart, because I have been calling that house for almost 20 years now.
"Hello?"
"Mr. Earl, this is Shelley, Dana's had a wreck. She is out by Pine Hill, and all I know is that it was loud and I could hear her car sliding out of control, and what sounded like glass busting"
He says "Is she ok?"
I then have to say that I don't know.
Silence.
So I say "I think so Mr. Earl, please go get her, and hurry."
FIFTEEN LONG MINUTES later, I find out:
A deer hit her WINDSHIELD, and busted it out. She is cut up, and swallowed glass, hence the whispering.
She is okay though. And she is alive.
And I will tell her as soon as she calls back what she means to me, corny or not. I have lost one close friend to an accident, and I don't like things to go unsaid. You shouldn't either. We have no tomorrows promised to us, remember that.

PTL that Dana is OK. Swallowing glass does not sound good. Hope she's gotten a good check up with her doctor.

I can't even begin to imagine what your mind was thinking...Thank God she is alright...Swallowing glass doesn't sound like it will have a very "painless" recovery!! Hope all is well.

And you are so right we are NOT promised tomorrow, and things SHOULD NEVER go unsaid!!

I am glad that she is ok!!! I can't imagine what could have been going thru your mind!! I think that we ALL at some point take everything for granted at some point in our lives, and probably more times than we should..Whether it be our friends, family or even our husbands or wives..The most important thing is that we learn from those mistakes..Right???

Oh goodness hope she's okay!!! I so know how that feels though (her side of it). I had the same thing happen to me and let me tell you it ain't fun. I didn't swallow glass, but when my baby in the back seat started screaming my heart stopped. Simone had glass in her eyes but other than that we were okay. Thank goodness she is too.

Man that is scary. I am glad that it wasn't more serious. It had to be hard on you when you didn't hear back from her for a while.
I lost my good friend in a car wreck in 1994. We weren't on the phone or anything, but I was supposed to have been in the car with her. I have NEVER gotten over that.
That horrible incident took part in what kind of person I am today, among other things.

DANG it! glad she's going to be OK. that happened to me with my friend ron. after he got out of rehab he came to visit us in monticello. he left and headed toward eureka springs, and i called to check and make sure he was doing ok, and while i was talking to him he had a wreck. i never heard it, he just said "i gotta go." later on he told me what happened. he probably shouldn't have told the trooper that he'd just gotten out of rehab, though :-)

I have been remembering that a lot lately. Thank goodness she is ok. These deer are crazy and they are getting worse it seems. I'm just glad that you were on the phone with her when it happened so that you could call for help.

You're most certainly right-- we're not guaranteed anything, and it's important to let the people we love know it!

dean September 20, 2008 at 8:25:00 AM CDT

deer aren't getting crazier, we're just encroaching on their habitat more and more with more subdivisions and building more roads. they get run by dogs day and night (although i'm aware this isnt hunting season yet) and they have less and less places to go that aren't near roads and highways. one reason i decided awhile back not to purchase another motorcycle. you think it's bad to hit a deer in a vehicle...

but with that deer getting up in her windshield, dana is surely one blessed young lady! glad she's OK.
