I wish I knew what it would take
to get some play by play coverage of the girls softball league and tournament all star games....
we are SUCH a baseball driven town.
Not in any way meaning to take away from the boys accomplishments, but hello! OUR GIRLS play their butts off, too.
There were at least 4 girls from Monticello that hit homeruns in the state tournament in Lake Village. It would be nice to see some of that in the Advance Monticellonian. I am aware they did post some of my pics in the "reader submitted" photos, and there was an acknowledgement that they won the tourney, but when Monticello can boast of a child on a 7-8 year old team that is an AWESOME switch hitter.... she deserves some notice above and beyond a couple lines under a group team photo. How about a play by play write up along the lines of the story written about the boys of the same age?
It was that way when I played high school softball myself; we never made the paper, but the Billies Baseball team always did.
Why is this?

i graduated in '01 and agree totally! our team never got covered at all, and the boyz always did!
people should try and be more fair about this, especially in this small town. i mean, the people that have kids getting overlooked are the same people that do their business here with all these merchants that keep that little paper alive.
i have seen you keeping up with the lil' girls teams and am glad you have, the women i work with liked checking out the action pix. and why don't the girls have a site like the cal rip boyz do?
Br%ke!
I have been told, but cannot confirm, that the boys website was maintained by Paul Griffin. He's a coach (probably on the board?) that apparently did that on his own. It was a really good site, with a forum to share info, and to post scores and stats. I agree that one for the girls would be great to have.
We will be making changes next year as we get used to being part of the Babe Ruth Softball association, so maybe that's something that will pan out?
I don't want to steal anyone's thunder that plays baseball, I just wish it was more equal.
and to answer the curious email I just got, lol, Jaye Lauren Pace is the switch hitter I was speaking of :)
It will take some seriously devoted people to head it in the right direction and stay with it to ensure it stays that way.
It would help if it were a money draw to the city and county. If they ever get solid program with fully devoted people, the softball association would endure much better.
You and I talked once about the building blocks need to be in place to set up great players through high school and college. They're just not there yet.
All of those things combined would bring some serious attention to the program. If it were solid enough to draw attention to this area then maybe the schools would set aside some money to build a better girls program.
AMEN! The girls definetly need some more coverage and always have!! We never got coverage just like you said and that was many years ago...lol!! It's time for a change!
