Input Wanted

Most people know that I have a friend that makes custom birthday, wedding, and other special event cakes. She is just getting going as an "official" business, but has been a decorator for quite some time. Tiffany has gotten into some really high-end work lately, and is now implementing a price minimum on her cakes. I think she underestimates the value of her work a lot of the time, so (unknown to Tiffany at the time of posting) I wanted to run an informal poll and ask,
How much would you think they cake below would cost? and, How long do you think it took her to make it? (that is NOT a plastic crown. It is handmade, as is the pillow, and all other decorative work)

TIFFANYPRINCESSCAKE
As she expands her business, she has been VERY into hearing what people think, so I would love some honesty here. I am going to email her and let her know this is up, and hopefully, it will help gather some info that is useful.

I would say $100 for the cake. I don't know how many hours b/c there is really no telling. It's a beautiful cake!!

You didn't say the size of the cake or how many it would feed, but I bet that would go for $200-300 in California!

Well, I'm not exactly the one to ask, because I don't pay that kind of money for my kids birthday cakes! I'd rather spend it on the gifts, but I would say $75 and it probably took at least 4-5 hours with baking and all! Just a guess though!

i would say around $150 and it probably took multiple days to make and sculpt everything. as far as total hours, i would say 8 -9. i have made several cakes in my day and they are just sheet cakes or character cakes and they are a lot of work in themselves, so i could only imagine how long it would take to do the stuff that she does!! She definately has a talent!

This cake is really beautiful. I bet it took several hours to make at least. I would say about $150 for the cake.

I paid $50 for Ethan's 2nd birthday cake and it wasn't this extravagant. Lots of detail work on this cake.

Tiffany your cakes are amazing. So glad you your taking off with the cakes buisness, you do fantastic work.

Wow. $200-300! I don't know how anyone can afford to pay for the rest of the party at that price. I guess everything in Cali is high.

I would have to say $150 to $200. The cake decoration of the cake looks to be very labor intensive.

okay... i know very little about baking and less about decorating... but what i do know a bit about is being paid for providing a service. i would guess that there has to be at least 12 hours tied up in this cake... some maybe waiting to bake or dry or whatever it does... but i bet at least 6-8 hands on hours. We just got body work done on the car and I believe the hourly rate was $45. Anytime you call a repairman... be a plumber, electrician, etc... you will pay at least $50/hr. Not to mention any materials that might be wrapped up in the cake... that i would guess is probably not much.. but again... i have no idea. So if my guesses are right... a body work guy or repairman would charge at least $3-400... and I bet this cake gets delivered too huh... i had my ice machine looked at the other day and the gas surchage was $25 from one side of town to the other. so yes... i bet her work is undervalued! wow... that was a ramble but work being undervalued is kinda a pet peave of mine!

amen, Matt. Tiffany and I have discussed that at length :)

Yeah, I totally agree with Matt. From the little bit of pricing I have seen that Tif charges, I think her talent/time is worth WAY more than that. Her artistic talent with her cakes is worth a LOT to me. I would say $200 for that cake, and if she lived even in central Arkansas, she could easily make that I bet.

Wow.. GORGEOUS! Though it would have to be one heck of a birthday occassion for me to pay it, I definitely think that cake is worth $150.. at minimum. Heck.. I typically pay $30 for a birthday cake made at the grocery store for my kids... and it sure doesn't look like that! lol

As for how long it would take to make it.. holy moly.. no idea. I'd have to say at two days?

Her work is worth 3 times the amount she charges, but I dont know how many people will pay that around here, unfortunately. She is an artist and very talented.I know that fondant takes quite awhile to set up so the preparation for this cake was probably a few days in the making.I definitely, definitely think these are some of the highest quality cakes I have ever seen and I know that she could make it in a much tougher market.

I'd probably say around $75-$125.00
I cant see spending over $125.00 for a birthday cake for a child... But don't get me wrong.. her work is insanely amazing! I cant wait to re-do her blog, HEHE

My wedding cake was only $300.00
So yea... thats my thought :-)
