Turn the other cheek.
"But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also." (Matthew 5:39, KJV)
This, literally translated at that time, as far as I can tell, is challenging someone to a "duel."
In Europe, this action developed into using a glove to hit the right cheek to signal the challenge to duel.
Therefore, by in fact turning the other cheek, Jesus was saying: DON'T ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE TO A DUEL!
It does not mean, I don't think, that a Christian, rolls over and plays dead, and takes their beating when being attacked. Matthew 5:39 is a statement to not be agitated and agrivated into reacting.
To be a "Thermostat and not a Thermometer," so that you don't blow your top. Or someone else's top.
I need some work on being a thermostat.

I try to practice this one...
"BUT IF YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM, AND IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK; FOR IN SO DOING YOU WILL HEAP BURNING COALS ON HIS HEAD"
I believe it is Romans 12:20
but fail frequently....
