I did fail to mention in my post that besides tax rebate checks, there are bailouts for people who knowingly got in way over their heads with adjustable rate mortgages that they could not possibly afford. I'm not real comfortable with the government bailing out irresponsible people who bought more house, with more mortgage, than they could afford. When you want something but can't afford it, you should just say no. I learned this lesson the hard way when I was younger and just didn't have the cajones to tell my then-wife "NO" when she insisted we buy a house in New Orleans while we still had a house in Mississippi we were having a difficult time selling. It took me 10 years to re-establish myself after that debacle. I don't believe I would have taken ANY lessons away from that experience had the government stepped in and bailed me out of a mess of my own making. Just my 2 cents-worth...
